This Sunday, the 92nd anniversary of The Oscars will premiere on ABC’s Television Network. As per usual, it will be held inside the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood. Prominent personalities will be watching the show unfold live. An estimated 4,000 celebrities are expected to attend the production. Despite this being the second year the Oscars will remain without a host, it is said to be an exciting show to tune into.

Oscar nominations came out mid-January. Joker is leading the way with a total of 11 nominations. Joaquin Phoenix is the actor behind the famous clown who is a nominee in the category ‘Best Actors’ this year. Phoenix reported that even though he felt overwhelmed when hearing the news, he was honored. Other notable nominations include the movies Little Women and Jojo Rabbit; Scarlett Johansson, Cynthia Erivo, and Leonardo DiCaprio are nominated in their respective categories for Actors & Actresses as well.

Students here on campus also stand behind Joker and all of its nominations. Andrew Alvarez, a sophomore at Eastside, agrees with the chances of the movie winning many gold-plated Oscar statuettes. “It is such a great movie that has received such high praise ever since it was released in the cinema,” he tells us. “People around the world were anticipating Joker ever since the news was made public. I surely was, and I wasn’t disappointed.”

Andrew seems to be one of the few students who are going to watch the Oscars. A recent poll on our Instagram, @PridesourceToday, showed that only 27% of Eastside students were going to watch the ceremony.

A controversy regarding the Oscars emerged almost as soon as the nominations were made public. No female directors were nominated. Ever since 1929, there have been ten female directors chosen for the Director category. Out of those ten, only one female won; that woman was Kathryn Bigelow in 2010. There have been many upset people that shared their opinions on social platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter.

Cytlaly Angulo, also a sophomore here at Eastside, was upset with the decision made. “It’s not fair at all,” she says. “There have been movies directed by females that came out this previous year, and their work was amazing! I truly think that some women deserved to have their work chosen and appreciated.”

You can watch the Oscars live on ABC. In fact, people in 225 countries around the world will be tuning in. Don’t miss in. And don’t forget the snacks!
