We now live in a remote-first world

At Prime Movers Lab, we have been running a remote organization since Day 1. My partner Dakin Sloss has written about why Remote Investing is the present and future of investing — and it has given us a massive competitive advantage. We have designed our organization intentionally from the ground up and did not have to scramble to “figure it out” when Covid hit. We have been able to hire the best talent and scale our organization to review over 4,000 investment opportunities a year. Some of our best investments were made in 2020 as other VCs were trying to adjust their workflows. Check out this great tactical advice on Visibility in a Remote Organization by Daniel Narea.

I deeply believe the future is remote work; distributed teams are absolutely critical to allow us to scale beyond Silicon Valley and to truly unleash the world’s untapped human potential. I was among the first angel investors in a company called Turing alongside Cyan Banister and Ashu Garg from Foundation Capital in 2019. Turing gives employers access to a planetary pool of engineers, and today is valued at $1.1 billion after securing $87 million in Series D financing.

Turing’s Intelligent Talent Cloud uses AI to source, vet, match, and manage 1M+ software developers worldwide. The organization’s automated platform allows companies to spin up their engineering dream teams at the push of a button. Turing combines planetary reach and AI to help deliver customers their ideal engineers, billed by the month. Enterprise customers include Johnson & Johnson, Dell, Disney, Rivian, Plume, Coinbase, and VillageMD.

Although I still call Silicon Valley home, a growing amount of talented investors, entrepreneurs and engineers do not. This untethered modernity has only further opened people’s minds to rethinking distributed teams.

The way companies build engineering projects and engage talent worldwide is changing rapidly. We are undoubtedly in a paradigm shift. Talent is the biggest chokehold on growth. Tapping into the abundance of global talent is good business and I am proud of what Turing has built to help enable that shift.

Turing was a personal angel investment; not a Prime Movers Lab investment.
