Last week, we hosted our annual Breakthrough Science Summit where we facilitated discussions with some of the most interesting innovators and investors in breakthrough science to create a vision for a better future. In this post, I have highlighted some of the key takeaways from each of our four discussion areas.
First, let me say that we at Prime Movers Lab were in awe of the opportunity to be with these amazing people — people who are inventing and funding our future.
A MEZmerizing Future:
Our Chief Futurist Ramez Naam took us on a whirlwind journey of the future and made some bold predictions you’ll want to hear. Ramez declared his optimism about the future because of innovative technology. He said, “Ideas are the one resource that we always have more of over time rather than less.”
He also introduced the firm’s Breakthrough Science Roadmap and outlined the key innovations that we expect to transform the way we live between now and 2050.

Founders Panel:
We were then treated to journeys and perspectives of four amazing founders whose breakthrough science companies are transforming space travel, revolutionizing treatments for depression, and even resurrecting the DNA of extinct animals. All that in one panel! Each one of them is doing absolutely amazing things and described how their work is impacting the world. Especially wonderful was the conversation about what they are most optimistic about, which was unanimously the prospect of a younger generation coupled with new powerful ideas.
Investor Panel:
What would startups be without the funding and support to bring their future-changing visions to life? Next up was Prime Movers Lab General Partner Suzanne Fletcher hosting an incredible panel of climate and deep tech investors who outlined the challenges facing startups today as well as why breakthrough science is such an exciting sector to be investing in right now. Discussions ranged from what it takes to get commercial traction, the importance of a technological moat, and recognizing early signals for commercialization. Panelists shared additional advice for founders about securing LOIs, increasing revenue, and how to weigh your time between technical advancement and business investment.
Keynote:
In our keynote, Prime Movers Lab Founder and General Partner Dakin Sloss sat down with XPRIZE Foundation CEO Anousheh Ansari. The pair discussed her childhood dream of traveling to space, the XPRIZE Foundation’s efforts to encourage technological development to benefit humanity, and how to raise creative and inquisitive kids.
