You’re not supposed to talk about sexuality at work, right? That’s what I thought, up until I saw the question about my sexual orientation right there on the “Culture and Climate Survey.”

The entire Bedford School teaching and support staff were gathered in my library for a staff meeting. It was only early October, but already the administrators could see that the 2019–2020 school year was off to a rocky start.

The vibe of this school had long been toxic — rife with teacher drama, entitled students, and elitist parents. My principal’s idea was that we’d all take an anonymous survey via a Google form, and the answers would inform the specific work that was needed. He asked us to take the survey seriously, encouraging thoughtful, honest answers.

We, the staff, were encouraged to move to more comfortable spots within the library to complete the survey in relative privacy, right then and there. I got up and went over to my circulation desk computer.

The first few questions were typical — but then, right there at 8am on a Wednesday morning, was my first official opportunity to proclaim my newfound bisexuality.
