It took me a long time to accept my gender as not cis.

Here are a few of the signs I missed.

Note: I don’t believe in the gender binary but will be using phrases like “other gender". This is not to exclude nonbinary identities but to reflect the phrasing I thought in before I realized my own nonbinary identity.

1. You assume everyone with your assigned gender at birth is envious of the other gender

Especially for people assigned female at birth, it is normal to have some gender envy.

Even if we can’t articulate it, we often know intuitively that girls are not treated fairly compared to boys.

Boys are allowed to get away with lots more, and male privilege among adults is usually apparent very early on.

For people assigned male at birth, it might be normal to wish to wear a dress sometimes or to be envious that girls are allowed to cry.

It can be hard to know what level of envy is normal, but discuss it with people you know.
