Transgender advocate and thinker Julia Serano wrote yesterday to plan this media event for the first day both the U.S. House and Senate are back in session. The editors of Prism & Pen join her urging YOUR participation. If you write for P&P, or if you’ve ever wanted to, now is the time for some heartfelt writing action.
Why?
Yesterday, Julia wrote on Medium, “As most of you are aware, since Kamala Harris’s election loss (which trans people were not in charge of nor responsible for), Democratic politicians and pundits have been signaling that they plan to throw trans people under the bus.”
I’m not going to reproduce her entire post, but here’s a key section:
I propose that on Tuesday, December 3rd, 2024 (the first day that both the House and Senate are back in session), all of us who are invested in this issue and have a platform (whether it be a blog, newsletter, column, podcast, YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, etc.) publish a piece with the shared title: “LGBTQ+ People Are Not Going Back.” Yes, I know, it’s a cheesy title, but it holds Democrats accountable to their own talking points and makes it clear that backsliding on LGBTQ+ rights is nonnegotiable for us.
A Democratic backsliding is already clearly starting. Trans people are the main targets at the moment, but the conservatives the Dems are trying to placate are certainly not going to stop with trans people, as Julia points out.
Divide and conquer IS the MAGA strategy, and they aren’t shy proclaiming that. All LGBTQ people in the U.S. face an existential crisis today as politicians on the Right plot to eliminate our human and civils rights — and as politicians on the Left consider abandoning us.
We are strong together!
We’re a large enough voting block that the Democratic Party will always have a hard time winning without us. Time to remind them! Time to urge them to stick to the principles they say they stand for — and that Americans of good will everywhere support.
All it takes for evil to triumph is a few good people who choose to do nothing.

You can join Prism & Pen in this campaign by submitting stories through December 2 for publication on December 3. (Or you can participate on your own, of course!) If you want to publish with us, please include “LGBTQ+ People Are Not Going Back!” as part your title, being sure to be more specific in your subtitle. Please use #LGBTQNotGoingBack as one of your topic tags.
We’re suspending some of our ordinary story guidelines in favor of publishing as much as possible. We ask only that your story be well proof-read and clearly written when you submit it; we hope it packs a punch. We hope it’s personal and powerful — a human testament to decency and goodness.
We normally publish only four stories per day, but on December 3, we’ll publish as many #LGBTQNotGoingBack stories as we’ve received. And we’ll be promoting them all over social media to add to Julia’s roar.
