The bright colors of the oil paint dripped over the canvas. Meredith sighed heavily, then took a few steps back to admire her newest piece. It had taken her about forty hours to finish this painting. Nyx stared right back at her with lovely hazel eyes, a smirk at the corner of her lips. And that dimple on her cheek Meredith loved so much. She had hoped that painting Nyx would banish the demon from her thoughts. But it only made things worse. Nyx was all she thought about ever since the disastrous dinner with her parents.

Her phone rang for the sixth time today. Again, she refused to pick up Nyx’s call. The same had happened yesterday, and the day before. She couldn’t bring herself to talk to the woman. It rang a seventh time, and Meredith just stared at the phone, at war with herself. Should she talk to Nyx? Nyx must be so worried about her. No. She had to stay away from the demon.

That would certainly hurt Nyx. But it was for the best. She wanted to block the number, however, each time she was close to doing it, she lost her nerve. She didn’t want to lose Nyx. She didn’t want to lose her family either. God, what was she doing? Was she being selfish? Was she —
