Texas House member Shawn Thierry (L) and her opponent Lauren Ashley Simmons, from their respective campaign websites.

Shawn Thierry and Lauren Ashley Simmons are two Democrats in Houston who are running for Thierry's current seat in the Texas House of Representatives. The campaign has drawn considerable passion and controversy due to one candidate calling for “an end to genocide.”

To make it clear, this is not about the current Israeli/Gaza conflict, the crisis in Sudan, or the mistreatment and abuse of many women in Muslim nations. Thierry is calling out the supposed “castration” of Black boys, the “sterilization” of Black girls, and the “genocide of Black Americans.”

She is calling trans health care “Black Genocide.”

Thierry and her supporters have taken aim at Simmons, a union organizer who identifies as queer. Some have accused Simmons of an effort to damage, if not outright nullify, the central component of Black religious values. Signs stating, “Stop the Genocide of Black Children” have been seen throughout various parts of the Houston area. Thierry has the backing of several Christian ministers and six of her House colleagues, including Harrold Dutton, another Houston Democrat who voted with her to ban gender-affirming care in the state.
