P Minus 26 days and counting!

Pride month is almost here, and the need has seldom been greater in the U.S. or the U.K. Queer history and transgender rights/dignity are under withering attack as part of a global anti-LGBTQ backlash. I thought about Pride this morning when I woke to news that police in Rio de Janeiro foiled a plot to murder LGBTQ fans at a free Lady Gaga concert last Saturday.

The superstar, who is an outspoken friend and ally to queer people, performed for a crowd of 2 million without incident, but …

As soon as I read the story, I thought about June and Pride. With so many political leaders stirring up hatred in exchange for power, what’s next? Will Pride marches and parades be safe this year? Paying for security is going to be a lot harder in the U.S. as most corporate Pride sponsors bail, often at the last minute, according to the Washington Post.

How Will You Stay Positive for Pride This Year? Protest?

I’m old enough that my memories of Pride as a young man focus on protest rather than celebration. Pride for me then was Dykes on Bikes roaring by with fists in air, Act Up die ins, NYC cops turning their backs when…
