It Rains Because I Think of You

Or do I think of you because it rains?

the rain is falling
the plop of each drop stirs me
I want to kiss you

my fingers — your hair
memories of lovemaking
show up without fail

I remember this
we did not last, we could not
the fire quickly died

and now, there’s more rain
I see your face so clearly —
hoping I’ll forget

*I don’t consider myself a pessimist. I think of a pessimist as someone who is waiting for it to rain. And I feel soaked to the skin. — Leonard Cohen
