As Elvis’ rich voice sang over the speakers about wise men and fools, Ewan stepped out of his parents’ kitchen into the backyard. He looked over to the back deck where Drew was just coming out of the sliding doors from the dining room. Ewan’s heart swooped, and he couldn’t keep the grin off his face.

The night before, Mason had wandered into the basement den and stared around at all the activity. “Are you all painting your nails?” he asked, his voice full of disbelief.

Ewan looked up from watching Annalyn carefully brush gold polish onto his nails. “Yep. Want to join us?”

Mason frowned at Ewan’s nails then grimaced at where Kaela was doing Carl’s a pearly white. “Ugh, no. Why are you doing that, Carl? You’re not gay.”

Carl shrugged and grinned. “It’s fun.”

“Hold still,” Kaela griped. “You’re getting it all over your fingers.” She put the brush back into the polish bottle and carefully cleaned Carl’s fingers.

Carl winked at Mason and stage whispered, “Besides, I always enjoy having Kaela touch me.”

Mason rolled his eyes. “Whatever.”

As Mason slouched back out of the den, Grace caught Ewan’s eye and started to giggle, which set him…
