LGBTQ+ Americans Should Take Back Old Glory from Right-Wing Haters

It’s happening in Brazil… and we could do it, too.

In commemoration of the Stonewall Uprising (June 28, 1969-July 3, 1969) often referred to as “the birth of the gay liberation movement,” the queer and trans community worldwide has traditionally staged Pride celebrations during the month of June.

However, more and more, Pride festivities seem to be stretching out across the summer months. Portland, Oregon, for one instance, is among the many municipalities moving this season’s Pride weekend from June to July. I, for one, am very much looking forward to walking head-held-high in the Portland parade with Basic Rights Oregon, as I’ve done in the past.

Pride is political.

While Pride festivities invariably exude an atmosphere of joy, as the LGBTQ+ community and our allies gather in recognition and celebration of queerness and the freedom to live openly as our true selves, we shouldn’t lose touch with the original roots of Pride, which are more political than celebratory.

The American Flag dilemma…

Recently, Prism & Pen published my piece entitled, “Colorado Republicans Call for Flag Burning… Pride Flags, that is!”
