Recently, I wrote about how a story I submitted to an anthology about animal familiars was rejected by editors who — either willfully or ignorantly — misunderstood its core queerness. My explicitly sapphic love story, first published here in Prism & Pen as “And Kitty Makes Three,” was reduced by these editors to banter between “roommates”. Eugh!

As much as it sucked, I’ve been lucky to have the opportunity to publish queer work without retaliation. However, many 2SLGBTQ+ writers struggle to put their voice out there.

Whether facing serious dangers like persecution, or the roadblocks of homophobic editors, our work being misunderstood, or simply not fitting into spaces that weren’t built to accommodate us, 2SLGBTQ+ writers around the world face unique challenges when it comes to getting published (and getting paid to publish) in a historically heteropatriarchal industry.

While many writing opportunities encourage 2SLGBTQ+ writers to submit (and those niches are generally “safe”), this list hopes to help others struggling with placing their work by collecting paid writing opportunities specifically seeking 2SLGBTQ+…
