LGBTQ+ People Are Not Going Back. LGBTQ+ Rights are Human Rights.
I stand with my U.S. siblings.
Human rights are something every single reasonable person must strive to protect, regardless of who or where they are — it is our duty as humans to stand for one another. As a proud member of the LGBTQ+ community myself, I find it deeply disheartening to see that a country which once made such progress in advancing and protecting our rights is now taking such a devastating step backward. The laws being passed — violating basic rights and disregarding the dignity, autonomy, and validity of already marginalized and vulnerable groups — are indescribably horrendous. These decisions, driven by populist politicians and the greed of corrupt powerbrokers, betray the very principles of justice and equality that so many of us have fought for.
What makes this moment even more heartbreaking is that it isn’t just coming from those who have always opposed our existence — it’s also a betrayal from those who claimed to stand with us. The Democratic Party, which so often touted itself as the champion of equality and boasted about its commitment to LGBTQ+ rights during election campaigns, now seems willing to sacrifice our community for political convenience. Their backpedaling — quietly signaling retreat while emboldening those who seek to erase us — is a cruel reminder that political promises are meaningless without action.
I am not from the USA, but as a member of this beautiful and diverse global LGBTQ+ family, I stand with my U.S. siblings. My heart goes out to everyone who is struggling right now — no one deserves the hardship and fear you’ve been forced to endure. From across the ocean, I see you. I see your courage, your resilience, and your strength in the face of challenges that should never have been placed upon you in the first place.
These attacks on the LGBTQ+ community — especially trans people — are not just an American issue. They reflect a disturbing global trend where populist leaders and extremists exploit fear and misinformation to divide and conquer. What happens in the United States doesn’t stay in the United States; it ripples across the globe. When one of the world’s most influential democracies falters in its commitment to equality, it emboldens those who seek to oppress elsewhere.
It is infuriating to watch lawmakers — who once spoke of progress and inclusivity — now backpedaling, casting trans and queer people aside for political expediency. Trans people, in particular, have been scapegoated, targeted in an insidious campaign of dehumanization. And as history has shown us, these attacks on one group often mark the beginning of broader erosion of rights. None of us can afford to be silent in the face of such injustice.
As Julia Serano said, we are strong together. No matter where we are in the world, we must amplify this message: LGBTQ+ people are not going back.
To my U.S. LGBTQ+ siblings, I want you to know you are not alone. Those of us outside the U.S. are standing with you, not just as allies but as family — sharing in your fears and determined to support your fight. December 3 is an opportunity to unite and send a clear message to politicians — on both sides of the aisle — that LGBTQ+ rights are non-negotiable.
To the Democratic Party: your principles are being tested now, and we are watching. Do not fail the very people who helped bring you to power.
To my fellow LGBTQ+ community members and allies worldwide: this is our fight too. Hatred and division cannot be allowed to fester unchecked, whether in the streets of small-town America or in our own communities. Let us use our platforms, however large or small, to join the roar and declare that LGBTQ+ rights are human rights — everywhere.
Together, we must ensure that the voices calling for dignity, equality, and justice are too loud to ignore.
We will not go back.
With love and solidarity,
Dayna
