The best way to bring folks together is to give them a real good enemy.— The Wizard in Wicked Part 1

Republicans have decided trans people are an excellent scapegoat to whip up enthusiasm for their team.

Some Democrats are taking notes. Hmmm, demonizing this subgroup seems popular. We don’t want to lose what little power we have left so probably best we give in a bit, let them have their silly sports bills and bathroom bans. That’ll satisfy them.

Let me put on my best middle aged mom voice, “Hold it right there, Buster. In this house, we do not throw our friends under the bus. Did you do your history homework? How well does appeasement usually work?”

“But mom,” the politician whines, “the people elected us to focus on the important issues.”

“Sweetheart, standing up to bullies is always important. There’s no need to get sucked into their games and drama but we don’t let them push around our friends, particularly not our friends who are being picked on by others.”

Sticking with my mom theme for a moment, let me brag about my daughter. She’s a mathematics grad student with a near photographic memory…
