There’s this sort of sub-culture of pretentious pseudo-intellectuals who exploit this social issue or that for cheap, simple notoriety. They rarely know anything about these topics, but they don’t need to.

They’re trying to spin their narratives as sane moderation and the other side as feckless ideologues.

In the process, their audience gets plausible deniability for their prejudices.

You ALL Know Who I’m Talking About Here

Jesse Singal is pretty infamous for this on trans issues, which is why it isn’t surprising Ana Kasparian went running to him right after she tried to pick a fight with trans people about language.

Others like Matt Yglesias and Jonathan Chait do this with practically everything but keep coming back to care for trans youth for the chance to feign concern for the children.

This article by Yglesias is a great example:

‘…left-wing institutions prioritizing allyship over analytical rigor, and a robust culture of anathematizing anyone who says the “wrong” thing on this topic, we are now in a new era of medicalizing teen girls’ discomfort with patriarchy while downplaying what appears to be a widespread youth
