Seven years ago, during the Spring and Summer of 2017, I did something crazy. I took a very long walk… from Southern California back home to the Central Oregon Coast — a 90-day, 900-mile trek.

That I was 67 at the time, with chronic foot and knee problems, limited camping experience, and zero knowledge about long-distance hiking only added lunacy to my quixotic mission.

Crazy days…

But there was a lot of insanity going around at the time…

After all, my country had just elected a racist, narcissistic xenophobe as its president, an inexplicable event that had a lot to do with me hitting the road on foot.

“It just feels like this country is getting mean,” I explained to anyone who inquired. Curiously, I don’t recall anyone ever taking issue with this statement — regardless of their political affiliation, religious faith, or social status.

What I meant (and what they all seemed to understand) was that a surprising number of Americans were interpreting the ugly tone of the previous year’s presidential campaign and the bigoted posture of the new administration as permission to shout their…
