For queer travelers seeking emerging havens, I’m writing today about lesser-known cities that don’t disappoint: like Ukiah, Asheville, and Fresno. From the rustic allure of Mendocino County to the Central Valley’s growing inclusivity and Santa Rosa’s serene beauty, join me as I explore how each of these towns is blending tradition with modernity to create welcoming spaces for the LGBTQ+ community.

Asheville, North Carolina

Known for its inclusive atmosphere, Asheville hosts several organizations that support and advocate for the LGBTQ+ community. Asheville Pride is one of them. Other popular spots include The Sly Grog Lounge, The Gray Eagle, and The Odditorium. The city’s theaters, galleries, and festivals often showcase queer talent and themes.

Asheville’s crowd includes a diverse mix of people, many accompanied by dogs. I spot vibrant sweaters, colorful hair, glasses, and beanies. Streets feature quirky sights, like a VW with a skeleton slouched over the steering wheel, and a brass sculpture of a mama pig and her baby.
