Our Worn, Hippy, ‘Gay’ Wedding Rings Are Just Rings.

My husband and I have been married for 15 years, and we’ve been a committed couple for twice that long, plus a few years. For at least 25 of those years, we have worn matching white gold bands that are etched to look like a folded feather. Yes, we are late sixties hippies, and the rings reflected our love for the environment and nature when we had them cast “way back then.”

A friend of ours was a talented artist and jeweler. He designed them for us and cast them from his original work. He has since passed away in a rather sad and lonely situation, so looking at them always brings a poignant moment of sadness, when I recall their origin.

Because both of our rings have become worn and the etching is smooth in some places, we are thinking of having them re-etched so the features of the feather are once again prominent. I’m ok with the worn look but I promised my husband I would look into having this work done.

I dropped by the jeweler we use occasionally for watch band replacements, necklace repair, or any other jewelry work, and showed my ring to the salesperson. She said that she was certain the jeweler could do the work, so “just leave it with me and I’ll have him take a look at…
