Once again, ignorance and bias leads to the proliferation of misinformation. That, in turn, results in multiple threats and expressions of hatred levied against a person who did nothing to bother anyone, but was simply exercising their right to use a public facility and go about their life in peace.

And, as so often happens these days, small-minded rumor mongering stirs up a wave of hysteria, triggering overwrought complaints aimed at city officials and facility managers for simply carrying out policies that align with state and local laws and regulations.

If those factors, in and of themselves, don’t amount to enough of a waste of human energy, a conservative-owned media outlet is actively and blatantly fanning the flames.

Newport (Oregon) City Hall was a-buzz on Monday evening, May 20. The City Council chamber was jam-packed, standing room only.

If you were to believe the headline blast the following morning from Portland’s KATU News, you’d picture the pitchfork-and-torch brigade barging into the council meeting to protest a new caravan of trans folk invading our public spaces.
