If, for example, you find yourself imagining ways you could create a cozier living space inspired by the peaceful watercolors of animals having a tea party as lovingly depicted by Beatrix Potter, you might very well be aligned with the cottagecore lesbian agenda.

I call it an agenda with a smile. That’s too edgy a word to describe a group of activities meant to support the introvert in all of us, the part of us that sometimes can’t help but daydream about a past we didn’t live but maybe became enamored with through fictional protagonists like Anne of Green Gables and real-life role models like Emily Dickinson (who has herself become a fictionalized character in plays, in movies, and most recently on TV).

Journalists and scholars trying to describe cottagcore often refer to it as an aesthetic. I think for some participants it’s more of a look and a style rather than a feeling or group of practices — after all, we wouldn’t have the term “cottagecore” without Tumblr, Reddit, Instagram, and other places where folks gather online to share photos and stories of their aspirations toward a lifestyle that is partly nostalgia, partly self-care, and partly a way to self-identify on dating apps so that other queer women know more about you.
