Over the last two hundred years, pre-Columbian artifacts such as golden masks, arm bands, jewelry and drinking vessels have been uncovered at archaeological sites, often by accident, especially in Peru, Chile and Mexico. In certain cases, these discoveries gave rise to a looting frenzy with literally tons of precious relics being tragically melted down or sold to collectors by unscrupulous dealers or via the black market.
