This Disturbing Conversation Shows Why I’m Not Out as Bisexual to Family

They claim tolerance, but actions speak louder than words

Sis: “My best friend is a gay guy, so I have no problem with THE GAYS.”

Me: “What if I told you I was gay?”

Sis: “Well, you’re not. You’re married.”

Me: “Okay, what if I told you I am bisexual?”

Sis: “That’s gross, bubby. Why would you say that? Does your wife know?”

Me: “I didn’t say I was, I said what would you say if I told you I am?”

Sis: “I would say you’re fucking gay and your wife is just covering for you. But you’re my brother and I would know and you’re not gay, stop playing.”

Me: “So, it’s okay as long as it’s not family, is that what you’re saying?”

Sis: “It’s okay if it’s not you, bubby. Can we not talk about this? Because it’s just a joke anyway, right?”

And people wonder why I’m in the closet.

My older sister and her kids were down visiting my wife and I when this disturbing conversation happened. What prompted it was a hat I was wearing that said “Native Pride.” I’m Native American…
