The media and politicians are quick to protect transphobic politicians and celebrities, but when transgender politicians are the target they don’t care

In the run-up to the UK’s general election and the preceding months, we’ve seen a huge amount of media coverage about death threats made against women like Rosie Duffield, the former Labour MP for Canterbury, and JK Rowling.

These threats are often attributed to people upset about their gender critical views and opposition to transgender people’s rights. In June 2024 a man was convicted after making threats against both Rowling and Duffield, because of their gender critical activism.

UN Women describe gender critical activists as “anti-rights”, highlighting that they have pushed for “overtly discriminatory policies” by “falsely portraying the rights of LGBTIQ+ people as competing with women’s rights”.

Gender critical activists are responsible for mainstreaming toxic anti-trans politics in the UK, which have become a prominent feature of political discourse in the run-up to the general election.

I disagree with gender critical activists. They want to restrict transgender
