I was watching a satirical comedy game show here in Australia. I’ve watched it many times. It’s fun. It’s funny. And it has some great comedians and guests. But tonight I turned it off because I once again saw the minimization and alteration of facts that too often leads to my community being misunderstood at best, and potentially killed at worst. That’s not even an exaggeration, though I wish it were.

Ranting while the feelings are raw

I must write words while the annoyance is still high because the annoyance will pass and then I won’t have the energy or drive to rant for my community. It’s hard to escape (or ignore) the seemingly insignificant moment when a fantastic opportunity is missed and information is lost. Especially when it’s done in a public forum — like popular media. Australia is exponentially safer for the queer community (and particularly transgender people) than many other places, but we still have a lot of people here who think television is a primary source of education and that journalism is still unbiased (like it ever was). And therein lies the issue.

So, what happened?
