ROME — Pope Francis on Tuesday reiterated his opposition to gay priests, allegedly repeating a highly pejorative slur in an encounter with clerics just two weeks after the Vatican issued an apology amid reports that he had used the same word in an earlier meeting with bishops.

Conservative religion won’t stop branding gay men as defective, and Pope Francis leads the charge.

This is going to be a short story, because I don’t have much to report, and what I do have is very sad. I wrote last week about Pope Francis uttering a mean-spirited anti-gay slur in Italian while instructing Italian bishops not to allow gay men to train for the priesthood.

I wrote about why the slur he used is so toxic, and I wrote about how that isn’t really the story. I wrote that despite making overtures to LGBTQ people, despite depicting the Catholic Church as accepting of queer folks, reality is far different. The real story is that that Pope Francis has always enforced his predecessor's novel ban on celibate gay men entering seminary training.
