Telegram scams: What to look out for when chatting online

Have you already joined us on Telegram? To help you feel safe on the network, we have a comprehensive article on Telegram scams.

is an open-source chat application that has been used by almost every community around cryptocurrency projects. That’s why we have our Telegram channel.

Our industry is full of visionaries, but also scammers trying to extract money from unsuspecting crypto-enthusiasts. To protect our community, we’ve come up with a comprehensive guide on how to use Telegram safely.

How to prevent potential fraud: policies and app settings

We have the Telegram. We can navigate the user interface. Now let’s look at how to use it safely in the world of cryptocurrency. We’ll introduce you to the policies and settings of the app itself so that you can prevent fraud.

Block involuntary additions to groups

Telegram has a factory-set rule that other users can add you to any group they want. This is to make it easier for friends to add each other. However, this is the rule that scammers take advantage of the most: they invite victims into fake groups where they carry out their misdeeds.

We will show you step by step how to block the involuntary add feature.

Step One: Enter Settings

Once the app is turned on, expand the menu in the top left corner of the screen. Then click on the “Settings” icon.

Step Two: Expand the privacy menu

Click on the “Privacy and Security” icon.

Step Three: enter group settings

Open the “Groups” menu.

Step Four: Block Involuntary Contact

In the settings you see, click on “Nobody”. This will make it so that no one can add you to groups. If you want someone to have an exception, it can be set under “Add Users”.

Blocking involuntary contact is an effective tool. However, you may have come into contact with scammers before and not even know it. Take a deliberate look at the groups you’re in and take note of these warning signs.

Fake groups

This is the most successful method used by fraudsters. It is very dangerous and the untrained eye could easily succumb to it.

This Telegram scam involves criminals creating an exact copy of a chat you are in. They then add you and other members of that group to the copy. You can easily mistake the real group for a fake one and fall for a scam message: for example, that you’ll get a PBX worth several times the value for sending cryptocurrencies.

Such chat is usually very close to the original. However, you can tell the real Probinex chat by the fact that when you click on its menu, you will see the address .

What do the most common scam messages look like?

Most often, scammers offer tokens (e.g. PBX) at a very low price. They pretend to be a trustworthy person and write personal messages to their victims. If you find someone like this, please notify us immediately.

Stolen identity

You will have noticed that some of us have a text after our name on Telegram that reads “will never PM you first”, translated as “I will never PM you first”.

Why? It’s a clever defense against the scammers. They can easily copy our profile picture, name and description. Then they start signing up clients they see in the chat room. If there’s a “I’ll never write you first” message behind the name, clients are more likely to notice that something doesn’t add up. Why would our CEO Adam offer you cheap tokens if he’s never supposed to write you first?

Some might think that we just don’t want to talk to you. The opposite is true! At Telegram, we can answer almost any question at any time.

Such deception can also take the form of good intent. For example, when someone in a group asks for a solution to a problem. The criminals then contact the person and offer to help. They say they need a “phrase” or “seed” from you. It’s a string of random words that represent the password to the wallet. You must NEVER reveal these words to anyone. If you actually send them, you will lose all funds immediately.

What does the seed look like?

Phishing attacks

Phishing is a practice in which a scammer tries to lure a phrase or personal information using a copy of a website or email.

In practice, it looks like the scammer contacts the victim to tell them to (for example) update their web profile. The victim then attempts to log in because he or she does not notice the altered web domain. At that point, the attacker knows the password and email to log into the portal.

An attacker may also want to extort a seed, the aforementioned string of words, instead of a password. He often promises a large reward or threatens severe punishment for sharing information. Again, you must NEVER share your phrase with anyone.

What principles to follow?

You may be getting dizzy from all this. But don’t despair. If you’ve read this far, you probably already know to approach everything on Telegram with skepticism. The basic principles can be summed up in three points:

  • NEVER tell anyone your phrase, the string of words representing the password to your wallet.
  • Always check that you are writing to the right person. Don’t be afraid to ask in our chat.
  • Before logging in to the site, make sure it has a address.
  • If anyone contacts you claiming to be us, please notify us immediately. This can be done via email, web chat or Telegram.
