Stop Looking For Your “Passion”
One of the most common reasons people give to justify procrastination is “not knowing their passion”.
Have you fallen into this trap?
If that’s the case, then I’m gonna tell you, nothing could be farther from the truth.
“Do what you love” is a well intentioned piece of advice. After all, how can anyone argue against that?
The problem lies in assuming that there is something “out there” waiting for you to discover it and all you have to do is keep looking.
Let me tell you something right away:
Nobody has ever found their passion by simply thinking.
You won’t find your passion by procrastinating either. It simply doesn’t happen that way.
Do you think that someone like Gordon Ramsay was sitting one day thinking and said to himself “I have decided that cooking is my passion” and then all of a sudden started to love everything related to food?
Of course not.
The whole idea is just ridiculous.
Telling ourselves that the reason we procrastinate is because we haven’t found our passion is just a trick of the mind. It’s a way to avoid having to deal with what’s really going on.
With that said, here are the two most common ways people find their passion:
#1. As they become better and more skillful at what they do, they develop passion towards it. So they don’t really “find” their passion, instead, they become passionateabout something.
This means that in the beginning you might struggle with starting a new business or learning a new skill, but as you start making progress and getting results, you realize that you actually enjoy it more and more.
#2. When trying new things, meeting new people, and exposing themselves to new opportunities, they eventually stumble upon something they enjoy tremendously.
For example, suppose you want to set up your own online store for selling technological products. Things are going ok and you’re making decent money. As you start looking for more products to sell, you find these really cool video cameras and you decide to buy one just for fun. You start recording some videos for your friends and they all say you have great talent. After some time you decide to start producing videos for companies and you absolutely love it!
Wanna know what those two methods have in common?
You’re actually taking action and doing something about your life!
You’re not just sitting there hoping that one day you’ll have this epiphany about what you were born to do in this world.
Let go of this idea that you have to find your passion first before you start taking action. It is one of the most dangerous beliefs that you can have.
Now, so far we’ve talked about passion as some particular activity that you’re supposed to love above everything else.
BUT…
Why wouldn’t you be passionate about everything?
Why wouldn’t you be passionate about life in general?
Why do you believe you need to be passionate about one thing in particular when life offers so many opportunities and beautiful things?
You see.
We are so inside our heads with all this talk about passion that we forget that life in general is something to be celebrated and appreciated.
Little things like going for a walk outdoors or even organizing your house can be just as enjoyable as everything else.
When you start changing your attitude towards life in general, you’ll realize that not only will you be happier, but you’ll also start making progress towards your goals and getting results.
And most importantly, you’ll stop feeling bad about yourself.
Makes sense?
Wishing you the best,
