Celebrating Pride at Procurify!
Diversity, equity, and inclusion is a top priority at Procurify. We have people from a variety of backgrounds and this diversity only strengthens our team.
DEI at Procurify: here’s what you need to know
In order to create an inclusive workplace, Procurify has several DEI initiatives to help create an inclusive space for all team members. These include things like employee resource groups and monthly diversity and roundtable discussions on topics such as gender, race, neurodiversity, understanding unconscious bias, and more.
The goal of these roundtable conversations is to come together to share insights, discuss progress, take action, and learn new things from each other. We strongly believe that learning about different backgrounds and perspectives and supporting our team members is a great way to make meaningful change across the organization.
This month, we welcomed Ky Sargeant, Equity and Inclusion Advisor at UBC Sauder School of Business, to our monthly roundtable discussion. Ky led a thoughtful, interactive session to help Procurifiers better understand gender diversity, specifically transgender individuals and the barriers they face and how we can be effective allies. She also asked us to think about how we understand our own gender and gender identity and how it has affected our lives.
Here are some of the things we learned from Ky’s session:
- Approximately 1 in 100 young people in Canada between the ages of 20–24 identify as trans/non-binary, and as many as 25 percent of LGBTQ2+ youth identify as non-binary.
- Gender identity and expression is legally protected under provincial Human Rights Codes and the Canadian Human Rights Act.
- There are different types of transgender transitions — social, medical, and legal — and there’s no one single path to transition. Everyone’s journey is different.
- Mistakes happen! If you accidentally misgender someone, simply apologize, make the correction, and move on.
- Using gendered language may be exclusionary or inaccurate.
- Everyone has unconscious assumptions and perceptions that inform our actions. But understanding these biases can help us make thoughtful, conscious decisions about what we say and do.
How can you show your support this Pride month?
- Tell people your pronouns: Add your pronouns to your Slack profile, Zoom name, and in your email signature.
- Be mindful of your language: Instead of using gendered terms like “Guys” or “Ladies and Gentlemen,” use more inclusive terms such as “Folks”, “Everyone”, or “All”, especially if you’re addressing groups of people.
- Practice allyship and supportive behaviors: Be a confidant, prioritize their needs and experiences, use your voice but don’t overpower the voices of those who you are supporting.
- Keep learning: Watch Youtube videos or TV shows about trans people, read articles about trans issues, and listen to podcasts created by trans people. We’d recommend: Samantha Lux (Youtube), What the Trans!? (podcast), and Queersplaining (podcast).
Diversity, equity, and inclusion is an ongoing learning experience. But by learning and taking action, we can make a better workplace where everyone feels safe, included, and valued, and where everyone has the opportunity to succeed.
