The business model canvas (BMC) is a strategic business model that has disrupted the world of boring business model, strategies and structures and is frequently used by start-ups and grown-ups (=succesful, longstanding start-ups) that are using the lean startup method by Ries. The template is used to visually describe the fields of the business model canvas; the product value propositions, infrastructure, revenues & costs and customers. The model is initated by Alexander Osterwalder and is based on the Business Model Ontology. The business model ontology is the nature, being, becoming, existence & reality of business models and why they are relevant. In order to make the canvas more applicable to different kind of sectors, different kind of niches have appeared, like the Lean Canvas, which is a combination of the Lean Startup method leaded by the BMC.

In the following two fields, Sercan Karabulut and I have created an infographic where we have described the ‘good vs evil’ — we described the pains and the gains of the BMC. The fields of pain are about visualization, test, reject & accept, the missing link and maintenance & agile. The field of gains are the depth, test, reject, accept & time, missing measurement and the notion of competition. Besides, we think that the intuition of the business model canvas is essential to found the balance between hard business data and the opinions of users & customers.
