Keep Tophatter Weird: Tophatter Opens Portland Engineering Office

Hello from Tophatter PDX! The idea to open an engineering office in the Pacific Northwest started where most things do at Tophatter, with the people. After reconnecting with Ashvin Kumar, an old friend and former coworker who happens to be the co-founder and CEO of Tophatter, a fun idea quickly spiraled into a business plan. You might wonder what makes Portland the best place to plant the next chapter of Tophatter’s growth, and the answer lies in the people-first mindset.

Great talent is everywhere, but we chose to expand to Portland for the people. Portland’s unique personality and creative mentality integrates with Tophatter’s culture. We make it fun to come to work, and promote people having fun outside of work, too. Unlimited PTO and flexible work hours are often empty promises at startups, but at Tophatter they are fully embraced. This is a space where you can evolve your career and still invest meaningfully in your community and life outside of work. As a Portland native, I am passionate about having a hand in the growing tech scene here. We are building out our distributed team and plan to scale the PDX office to match the size of the SF-based engineering org. We are full-stack generalists who are able to tackle any software area, including mobile clients (React Native), web (React), network services (Ruby on Rails), machine learning, and more. Learning, and doing, and learning some more is the way we work.
