Product leaders often struggle to determine how to condense a career filled with achievements and successes into a few short pages. So here are our top 3 tips for Product Management leaders who need to update their resumes:
Introduce your mandate
Whenever an employer makes the decision to hire a leader for their product organization, they typically do so for one of these two reasons:
- There is a problem that needs solving
- There is an opportunity to realize
Helping the hiring manager understand why you were selected for your last role will make it easier for them to hire you if they want someone with the same background as you.
Be specific
In a world of data-driven product decisions, employers want to understand the scope and scale of your products, your business, and your accomplishments with as much detail as possible.
A resume that lacks metrics or specifics suggests that a candidate either doesn’t have specific accomplishments to brag about, or that they do, but don’t feel it’s necessary to mention them.
Business point of view
Often what separates two product leaders is how they communicate their story — as it relates to the leadership of the business, and not just about their leadership of the product function.
- How did your decisions advance the business?
- What is the analyst community’s PoV on the decisions you made?
- How was the business able to scale based on the new product introductions you championed?
Ensure your resume addresses these questions to differentiate yourself from other candidates.
