Here are some guidelines for how long your resume should be.
When it comes to figuring out how long your resume should be, it’s a bit of a “goldilocks” situation. Some folks say one page is the sweet spot, while others stretch it to two or three pages. But what’s right for you depends on where you’re at in your career.
If you’re just starting out, aiming for one page works well. It’s like a quick snapshot of your experiences.
However, for seasoned professionals spanning a decade or more, with career shifts and progressions, a different approach is necessary. The principle of recency bias comes into play, wherein your recent roles hold the most significance.
Employers and Recruiters tend to pay more attention to your recent experiences. So emphasis should be placed on your latest roles, possibly extending to the last three positions. If your career journey’s been a bit of a rollercoaster or you’ve got a ton of industry know-how, that’s when curating your content becomes key.
Ultimately, the trick is to tailor your resume to highlight recent and relevant experiences. Since the goal of a resume is not to secure the job outright, but to secure the opportunity for further engagement, allowing you to convey your value more effectively in person.
