As a team, collaboration is key, because we can’t work lonely in a team. In my team, there are several roles, like an engineer, reviewer, and also designer. As designers, we collaborate a lot with other stakeholders, especially on matters related to design.

Figma, the super app
Figma, The Super App

The primary tool currently used by designers in my team is Figma. Figma provides everything related to the design needs of a product. But now Figma has become a collaboration support tool because anything can be done with Figma. Figma is a cloud-based design tool that enables real-time collaboration, making the design process more streamlined and efficient. Then, why did we choose Figma to support collaboration in my team? Here’s the answer

Collaborate across platform

Figma can run in a browser just like we access a website, meaning that engineers, stakeholders, and even product managers can access it regardless of the platform they use. It is easier for everyone who wants to collaborate without installing an application on their operating system. This is Figma’s strength when compared to its competitors.

Share easily

Select the blue “Share” button in the upper right corner, then copy the link. It’s that simple how to share projects on Figma. Members who get the link can access the Figma file and can view and comment on the file by default.

Need a specific frame or page to share? Quite simple, here’s the step:

  • Select the frame you want to share
  • Right-click on the cursor
  • Choose Copy/Paste as
  • Choose Copy link

Another simple way if you use a web browser is to select the frame, and then copy the link from the address bar.

Collecting feedback asynchronously

Getting feedback is an important part of our design process. This part is quite challenging especially when feedback comes from many places. Guess the feature? Yup, comment feature. This is one of the very useful Figma features in our daily design process. By sharing a Figma link, everyone who gets the link can access and comment on the Figma file, which means it allows them to give feedback by commenting on the design.

This allows designers to have project-centric asynchronous discussions so designers can gather feedback without having to do it synchronously in a formal meeting.

Collaborate in real-time

Figma is a tool that allows us to work together directly in real-time, this makes the design process much faster, especially for teams that have multiple designers working on a project. Not only designers, engineers, and stakeholders, even a UX writer can work together in a file directly. Any modifications or new designs made to a project are viewable in real-time in the file.

Lots of templates & plugins that support the design process

As product designer, we not only design the interface but also carries out other processes such as research, brainstorming, etc. Figma knew about that and boom! Figjam was born. Figjam is an online whiteboard and collaboration tool that can be used to brainstorm and organize ideas. Figjam has various templates provided such as brainstorming templates, user personas, empathy maps, and many more that really help a designer carry out his work. You can explore more about Figjam here.

Not only that, but Figma also has lots of plugins that designers can use to help their work, which can be accessed in the Figma community. Want to access the Figma community? Start here

It’s undeniable, Figma has moved from UI/UX tools to a “super app” that supports collaboration processes, makes work more efficient, and produces better results.

So, how do you use Figma to meet the needs of your design work and collaboration in your team? Let’s share
