A Collection Of Comedy Sub-Genres To Give You The Funnies.
Unlike other genres of movies, comedy is subjective. Most people cringe while watching horror movies or tend to be moved by drama movies. Laughter, on the other hand, is a personal choice. Some may laugh hysterically at a gag scene while some may find it bemusing. Like comfort food or therapy, comedy puts a smile on the face with its artistic portrayals or silly fart jokes.
Comedy as a genre is categorised into various sub-genres to cater to the needs of the audience. From slapstick to romantic to satirical, comedy distances your mind from reality and transports you to the land of laughter. Giving the many genres, let’s just say that there’s a special joke waiting for everyone. This list takes a look all the different kinds of comedy.
Satire comedy beautifully and harshly blends political incorrectness, pretense, and stupidity. Offensive to some, satire comedy is thought-provoking and questions the integrity of the real world. The Dictator, Borat, and The Great Dictator have gained popularity for satirising dictators and political situations.
This genre is a brilliant composition of action and comedy, making explosions and chases more appealing and funny. Mixing screwball comedy with adrenalin, action comedies present a situation with disasters, laughs, and bizarre action sequences. Bad Boys, Rush Hour, and 21 Jump Street are widely famous for their unique take on action movies.
Also known as parodies, spoof comedy purposely mocks other film genres. Ridiculous sight gags, groan-inducing scenes, and deadpan acting give life to spoof movies. Overlooked by film critics, spoof comedy is watchable without engaging the logic in your brain. Scary Movie (all of them), Austin Powers, and Hot Shots are good examples.
Typically addressing the use of cannabis in a positive light, stoner comedy is heaven for, well, stoners. Stoner comedy uses abstract plots, compelling drama, and obscure monologues to entertain their viewers. Harold & Kumar Go To White Castle, Dazed and Confused, The Big Lebowski, and Pineapple Express are some of the movies to entertain you while you hit that bong.
A guilty pleasure, romantic comedy or ‘rom-coms’ depict stories of love triangles, unrequited love, and surreptitious glances. Romantic comedies are light-hearted with humorous plot lines, giving you hope that love can overcome any obstacle. When Harry Met Sally, Bridget Jone’s Diary, and 10 Things I Hate About You grace the rom-com genre.
Gross Out Comedy
If fart jokes and crotch punches make you giggle, then gross-out comedy is the genre you should follow. Obscene dialogues, vulgar gags and sexual innuendos give substance to these movies. The humour is willfully tasteless and usually involves gratuitous nudity. American Pie, Meet The Fockers, and Van Wilder have achieved numerous laughs with their shocking comedic moments.
