Hello, I am Aneri Desai, your Career Bestie!
From being rejected 273 times during the job search phase to leading global teams and managing high-profile projects. I turned around my life in 7 years.
Now, I am on a mission to empower international students, spouses of skilled-immigrant workers and those who recently migrated to the US or Canada!
International student to Immigrant Coach! What inspired you to work on this idea,“Aneri Desai Coaching”?
I moved to the United States a decade ago as an international student to pursue MBA. An arranged marriage took a drastic turn, and I ended up spending a night at the airport with my whole life packed in a suitcase. I felt dependent, worthless, and miserable. I rebuilt my life. That was when I decided that no other woman should ever feel what I felt. I completed my degree and became financially independent. Landing my first job was extremely challenging. After getting 374 rejections, I finally landed my first job in an aerospace company.
I started as a Business Analyst and navigated my career through different leadership roles such as Scrum Master, Senior Project Manager. Earlier this year, I got a job offer for a Chief of Staff role, which I prepared for four years. I remembered the night at the airport and felt like -
There is no fun in climbing the corporate ladder all alone. I wanted to create a tribe for immigrant women where we can grow and thrive together.
I turned down my dream role, launched my career coaching company, and became a full-time career coach for immigrant women. In the last six months, I have helped 22 immigrant women (international students, dependent spouses, refugees, and second-generation immigrants) land over $2M salary collectively.
You have launched a “Dependent to Independent” program to help immigrants become financially independent. Why is this initiative important?
This initiative is so important because, We immigrant women leave our lives and careers behind and start over in a foreign land. We have the potential to land that next job or promotion but may not have the right tools and resources to get there. I have experienced what it feels like to be financially dependent, to request people for rides, and go to bed hoping for a better tomorrow where someone will see my worth and give me a job.
My career coaching program “Dependent to Independent” empowers immigrant women to celebrate their journey, own their career breaks, craft a compelling story and build a professional brand that helps them stand out in the hiring process. This program offers tools and resources to restart or elevate your career in corporate America and build meaningful connections.
One-on-One Coaching - Aneri Desai Coaching
Having Aneri as my career coach has been tremendously invaluable for me. Prior to starting my career coaching sessions…
Why does coaching/mentorship matter, especially for immigrants?
Unfortunately, colleges and schools do not teach us how to build meaningful relationships in the corporate world, stand out from the crowd, and navigate life in a foreign land. When you find a coach or a mentor who has been in your shoes and has navigated their life through these bumps and obstacles then it could be so empowering.
As a female founder, you have built a solid personal brand on social media. How do you constantly upskill yourself with industry trends to support the job seekers?
I intentionally invest in self-development through a life coach, workshops, and certifications that help me upskill myself with industry trends. I spend time monitoring job openings and connecting with industry leaders to stay tuned with the hiring trend.
What is your larger vision — where do you see Aneri Desai Coaching in the long term?
My vision is to create a platform for immigrant job seekers to
- Access job search tools and resources,
- Network with fellow job seekers, hiring managers, and recruiters,
- Build long-term professional relations, and
- Get customized guidance at every step of the way during their job search.
What would be one piece of advice you would give to an immigrant job seeker in the US?
When it comes to job search, everyone around you may have their own opinion. Sometimes, all the advice you get is conflicting and confusing. Find one trusted advisor who has either been in your shoes or who has helped people like you. Be the CEO of your career!
