Our goal is to make carbon credits easier to access and more valuable over time so that more people can gain value from the market. The app leverages gamification to reward users with digital assets that allocate funding to forestry services and the original holder on every trade (NFTrees).

Brittany Salas,
Co-Founder and CEO at Sādu

What inspired you to start working on your business idea?

The only way to tackle the climate crisis is by empowering everyone to take action and feel an immediate reward for their contributions. By rewarding fitness activities with trees and creating an easy entry point into the carbon market we are able to unite a sense of personal and financial wellbeing with the health of the planet.

Were there any big surprises or challenges you encountered along the way as you were building and scaling your business?

We started with the simple mission of increasing funding to forestry services as a means of mitigating climate change. Along the way we realized that the newly formed market for voluntary carbon credits is complex and opaque. This is what pushed us to build a product that makes nature based carbon credits easier to access and more valuable over time for investors and suppliers alike.

Tell us — how were you able to bring your idea from concept to completion and what did the very first version of your product or MVP look like?

The product is still in progress! It rewards outdoor activities with trees by allowing users to sync a smart watch or enter an activity directly into the app. The funding for the tree planting projects comes in the form of paid group challenges for companies, fitness studios, and anyone who wants to reduce their carbon footprint.

Any exciting initiatives in the pipeline?

We will release the first version of our eco-conscious NFTs this March.

What’s the biggest risk your business ever took?

Building and launching the product without any external capital.

Sādu contributes to the projects listed in the app in relation to the number of calories burned by Crew members. For those who are not part of a Crew it is still possible to connect your smart watch or fitness tracker and earn trees in the app. However, the trees earned outside of a Crew are a representation of Nominal Tees. Without a Crew, Nominal Trees do not count towards the projects on the platform.

What’s one thing you wish you’d done differently?

Do a better job of listening to my intuition during the launch of my first company.

The most important skills and traits entrepreneurs should possess?

Willingness to learn new things.

Your advice to aspiring entrepreneurs?

Investors follow trends. Products follow data.

A quote you live by?

“Simplicity. Consistency. Repetition. Pervasiveness.”
