This Organization Is Empowering Restaurants and Communities Affected by Covid-19
By Ramona Arora
Coronavirus closures have caused a devastating impact on millions of newly unemployed people as well as many businesses. Amongst these businesses, the restaurant industry has been hit the hardest.
OpenMeal is an online platform that was started by a group of ambitious dreamers to provide financially burdened individuals the autonomy to order their favorite meals from family-owned restaurants through donor sponsorship. It is currently operating in San Francisco, New York, Chicago, Dallas, and Los Angeles.
What inspired you to build OpenMeal?
As a group of first-generation Asian-American and Asian immigrants, we directly witnessed our favorite Chinese restaurants crumble as a result of the pandemic, xenophobia, and anti-Asian sentiment. With our team of young engineers, product managers, and designers, we built a technologically driven solution that bridges the gap between restaurants who have lost business, and financially affected individuals in need of food.
How does OpenMeal work?
OpenMeal diners receive a minimum of $20 in meal credits per week to use at any of our partnering local restaurants. Unlike standard food banks and non-profits, we’ve created a solution that gives diners the autonomy to order their favorite meals from a variety of restaurants.
How has OpenMeal helped restaurants and communities?
Every day, we receive messages from our diners who share stories of how OpenMeal has helped struggling individuals feed their families and relieve their financial burden. Since our inception in April, none of our volunteers left their bedroom chairs. Yet we’ve donated over 1600 meals and supported restaurants from SF to New York.
How can someone contribute to the OpenMeal movement?
Anyone can join the OpenMeal movement by making a donation here or helping us spread the word.
