Sarah Peterson began her career at Apple in Sales Strategy and Finance. In 2017, she left Apple and founded The Nudge with her brother John. The Nudge is a platform of digital lifestyle advisors for millennials. In her personal life and at The Nudge, Sarah is passionate about making it easier for people to spend their free time in meaningful ways — whether that’s backpacking for the first time, going on more creative date nights, or learning tools for more effective activism.
Sarah has a B.S. in Business Administration from University of Southern California. During her time at Apple, she spent two years abroad in the UAE, Switzerland, and Germany offices. She is happy to call San Francisco home once again.
What is the company’s mission?
Our mission is to help people live their best lives.
We believe in an idea called #nudging. Invite your crew to a weekend in Tahoe with the perfect planner email? That’s #nudging. Join thousands of others in a BLM protest? #nudging. Drag yourself to a 7AM outdoor fitness class the day after a late happy hour? #nudging. It’s how we live when we remember that life is short. Our community, and every Nudge program we create, is dedicated to helping each other live this way.
Your proudest achievement so far?
I’m really proud of our latest program — The Ally Nudge with Dr. Cadet. It’s a 1 month program via text that helps you do the work as an ally to the Black community. Proceeds are donated to NAACP Legal Defense Fund. Within weeks of launching, over 15,000 people have completed the program from over 1,700 cities in all 50 states. Thousands of anti-racist actions have been taken (e.g. emailing CEOs to follow-up on vague BLM statements, buying children’s books by Black authors, tough conversation with loved ones who aren’t allies). Working on this program with our team and Dr. Cadet challenged me and made me a stronger ally.
How has covid-19 changed things for the business and how are you responding to these changes?
We quickly pivoted our content to help Nudgers have fun and stay sane while navigate the changing safety guidelines. For example, we nudged them to watch Italian foreign films over Cacio e pepe takeout, figure out their at-home workout situation, and support local businesses who desperately need help. We also launched a camping program to help people get some fresh air during COVID, a healthy(ish) cooking program to help people revamp their cooking routines, and The Ally Nudge.
What’s the one piece of advice you’d give to other women entrepreneurs just starting out?
Find a community of other women entrepreneurs in a similar stage as you who can support you through the highs and lows of the journey. Trust me — sipping a glass of pinot after a crazy week with a gal who really gets it is a glorious feeling.
