You are not your user

You are not your user.

You are not. You will never be.

The moment you start building your product or marketing it or coding for it — you develop a bias that’s not present in your target segment. A bias that would make you very different from your typical user.

What’s possible though is that you can empathise. You can develop an objectivity that lets you see some of the barriers your users will face. You can think of your user’s context and infer how it can affect her perception of your product.

You can never be your user. This means that you understand that your views will not be the same as your users’, even if you share the same problem.

Accepting this reality can greatly help you to start understanding your user.
