⚖️ Stripe product culture, how to measure the team outputs & more / PM Snacks #38
1️⃣ Flow Efficiency: Powering the Current of Your Work
Mar 2019 • 5 min read • #execution
I speak regularly about why I don’t like to do “estimates” of the work we do as a team. There are 2 main reasons:
1/ Estimates are usually made up (even with an experienced team), and takes too much time to evaluate (and it’s never fun for anyone). But in my opinion, there are better alternatives. To control the output, the “flow efficiency”-indicator is a solution. Lead & cycle times are another.
2/ To build a commitment, I prefer to work backwards like an investor. For a specific problem & level of ambition, how much time am I comfortable to invest in that initiative?
2️⃣ Building Products at Stripe

Ken Norton continues his series on strong product cultures in iconic companies. The first one was on Airbnb, this one is about Stripe. Read on. Among other things:
1/ They balance deep thinking (= everything has to be articulated through written documents) & speed (= their CEO even has a dedicated page on his personal website)
2/ They work backwards from a multi-decade vision (= it helps to focus your thinking on facts with long term relevance, like user needs, rather than shiny new technologies)
3️⃣ Facebook’s Ghost Unicorn

To win a market, it’s usually a better strategy to create a relatable product: novel enough to tease the curiosity of users, but simple enough to have a clear narrative. That’s what Facebook nailed in the beginning, not Campus network (= the first mover). Snap did the same (the main primitive was very constrained, the UX was not).
4️⃣ Unveiling Material You
May 2021 • 4 min • #design
I usually don’t cover news but Google unveiled the new evolution of Material Design: Material You. Right from the name to the features, it actually shows something I talked about many times: the need for more personal experiences. I hope it signifies a new movement for no more boring apps.
