World Heritage Day 2022; Everything You Need To Know About The Day

Every year on April 18, World Heritage Day is observed to preserve human heritage and give recognition to the efforts of various organizations working towards it. Heritage site is often considered of being national importance to the history of a country.

World Heritage Day is celebrated across to world to show a collective effort of the communities in doing whats necessary. A place listed by the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization is a World Heritage Site to show cultural importance. It gives us an opportunity to preserve our culture which has quite universal value.

The theme for World Heritage Day 2022 is ‘Heritage and Climate’ to promote conversation research and employ strategies which are sustainable to protect these sites. International Council on Monuments and Sites urged people from various religious backgrounds to set aside their differences and spread message of solidarity.

Established in year 1964, ICOMOS organization was set on the principles of Venice Charter aka International Charter on the Conversation and Restoration of Monuments and Sites. The International Council of Mountains and Sights suggests celebrating World Heritage Day on 18th April 1982.

In 1983, on the 22nd UNESCO Conference a resolution was passed to celebrate World Heritage Day on 18th of April.

India has been home of beautiful ancient heritage monuments, here are some of sites every Indian should visit:

Khajuraho

This historical city has held a significant position of Indian culture for its Nagara style of architecture. The temple depict early Indian life and history. Name of the city is coined from Hindi word ‘Khajur’ which means date palm. In the another story, Khajura-vahaka which is a symbolic name for Shiva.

Modhera Sun Temple

Known as the perfect combination of Maths and Vastukala. The best time to visit this is during the equinox, as the dimensions and construction of the temple are beautifully made. During the equinox, the first ray of the sun lights up the shrine through the diamond place on the head of the Sun god.

Jatayupara

During the legendary Ramanyana, when Ravan abducted Maa Sita, it is said that bird Jatayu tried to save her. During the fight, he fell on the rocks after been injured badly. It is said that these are the same rocks on which the massive sculpture has been built.

Syama Prasad Mukherjee once said, ‘What we deplore is not that the gate of western knowledge was thrown open to Indians, but that such knowledge was imported to India at the sacrifice of our own cultural heritage. What was needed was a proper synthesis between the two systems and not neglect, far less destruction, of the Indian base.’ It is important to preserve our heritage sites to preserve our ancient culture.
