Medium Post 1 (Revised) Jobs that Interest Me
Local job (Towson, MD)
Events planner:
Skills I Have
– Scheduling skills: I’m really good with keeping track of what needs to be done. During my internship, I was on a team that helped plan a going away party for one of the employees.
- Time management skills: I’m able to plan my time in a manner that allows me to perform all my duties. During my internship, I would get different projects and blog assignments at once with various deadlines.
Skills I Need
- Client management skills: Being able to talk with angry clients and handling multiple clients at once is key for this profession. I would need to get some training on managing my anger and practicing more patience so I can deal with potentially angry clients when things don’t go their way.
Although I’d love to be an event planner, it is a self-employed profession, so I’d need to actively seek out clients. As stated in, Getting from College to Career, by Lindsey Pollack, “Jobs don’t come to you. Career plans don’t grow on trees.” (xiv).

Marketing manager:
Skills I Have
- People skills: I like interacting with people and working with them to finish projects. At my internship, I often had to collaborate with the other summer interns doing tasks such as maintaining the company blog. People skills also include interactions online. As stated by Pollak, “Email like a professional. Remember that every interaction you have with a professional networking contact or employer, or his or her assistant, is contributing to your image and your chances of getting as job.” (32).
- Creative brainstorming: I’ve always been more interested in the creative aspects over technical aspects. During my internship, I helped come up with themes for an employee’s going away party.
Skills I Need
- Negotiation knowledge: I need to get the best deal for my company, but sometimes it makes me uncomfortable to fight other people to get a fair deal. In addition, acquiring knowledge about my profession could help me naturally make better negotiations. As explained by Pollak, “Be an expert about your industry. There is no reason why you can’t read the same industry news, blogs and tweets as someone already working in the field you want to enter.” (45).
Transnational job (Delhi, India)
Content writer:
Skills I Have
- Search Engine Optimization: I understand how SEO works and what it’s used for. During my internship, I would attend various meetings and presentations. One pitch specifically was for this new app based off of key terms that were used by users to present them with specific products online.
-Editing: Content writers must edit. I got experience through my internship from peer-editing the potential blog posts before posting them online.
Skills I Need
-Researching: I’m not too fond of looking up information online and then crafting it into a post. To improve my researching skills, I would have to choose a different topic every week that piques my interest and then research information about it to write a short paper.
Many people believe that technical writers for not make enough money. However in this case, Pollak’s really stood out to me: “As you begin to assess yourself and what you want in your career, an important step is getting rid of what other people tell you that you should want. “ (52).
