The Challenges of Hiring Decision

The job mentor that I contact was James Gregory who works in Information Technology. He told me that the biggest challenges to making position and hiring decision for recent college graduates is no real-world experience since many employers prefer candidates with a little experience in their industry. Even though these individuals have graduated with a degree and assume they know a lot about their industry, real-world job experience will make them more marketable. However, many recent college graduates only have one to none internship experience in the field they want to work in. Many recent college graduates have a difficult time finding jobs, since for students who major in non- technical area of study, having complicated time choosing a career path. Since many graduates are realizing that their field of study is not easily hirable, or not applicable to an area they want to go into. Therefore, I agree with him since I am having a difficult time connecting my major to my future career field, because my field want me to have specific experience that I can’t find in Maryland, DC, and Virginia. Therefore, I am confused about my next steps since UMBC don’t have the courses in my desired career. As a result, I might have to change my career field, since there no guarantee with a master’s degree that I will get into the film and Television production industry.

At James Gregory companies the process for making personnel and financial decisions is the basis on how many experience that recent college graduates have and their qualifications when it comes to getting a job in the Information Technology field. Given that in Information Technology they require years of specialized experience depend on if that individuals want to work in the military, government, or non-governmental agencies. In addition, it depends on the state, what type of information technology they want to do such as computer programmers, computer systems analysts, network and computer systems administrators, or IT consultant. At James Gregory companies his work under the federal government since his companies work with the military (Air Force).

Therefore, everyone who is in his department or teams was or still are in the Air Force. As a reason all the recent graduate students who are or was in the Air Force and have a clearance. All of the financial decisions is basis on a competitive salary with rapid promotion potential. With many benefits such as health insurance, life insurance, child and dependent care (for individual who are or was in the military). In addition, many recent graduate student who are hiring in a federal government job salary are basis on government- regulated pay scales which are on a grade level.

A grade level is used to determine the pay level for a job such as:

GS-3 or GS-4: internships

GS-5-GS-7: entry- level positions

GS-8 -GS-12: Mid- level positions

Gs-13- GS-15: Top- level supervisory positions

In the grade level, there are ten steps that an individual have to do to receive a raise. However, most employees often move up one step each year. In addition, under the grade levels salaries have two parts which are base pay and a locality pay adjustment. The reason for this is to adjust to accommodate of the cost of living in different geographical locations. Therefore, Salary for recent graduate students at James Gregory companies or in the federal government will depend on the individual background.

I have learned that the federal government have their own pay scales, for individual who was or are the military. That these individuals get paid better due to their experience in the military. Which opens many doors that a individual who only have a degree but no military experience will not receive.
