Overcoming Obstacles

Last week, I was inspired after hearing Amanda Stamper tell her story of going from a teen mom who didn’t have a clue what to do to someone with a steady job working for the governor of Kentucky. There are often times for me where I can’t sleep because I’m so anxious of what the future will bring. I’ll be honest I try to live in the moment but being at this age, trying to finish school and get a decent job can be the most stressful feeling in the world as I’m sure most people can relate. What Stamper re-assured me was that it’s okay not to know what you want to do right now but it is also important to work hard at what is in front of you.

My brother, Will is four years older than me living in Dallas with his dream job that he always told me he wanted, but more importantly the job he told me he was always going to get. Will is the type of guy is who is almost annoyingly optimistic. There was a time when our car got towed and I began cussing up a storm and his response was that our car most likely got towed to teach us a lesson where to park so we never get towed again. As weird is this may sound, there are times where I wish he would be just a little bit more negative just so we can relate more when bad things come up because when life isn’t going my way, I am not the most pleasant person to be around. Further more, I learn a lot from my brother as he tells me that it doesn’t matter what you are really doing right now as long as you are your absolute best at it. In my sophomore year of high school, I was a bus boy at a hotel restaurant. I hated it. I got paid next to nothing, I cleaned up dirty plates from unpleasant customers, and it took me almost a half hour to get to work every evening. I was explaining all of this to my brother and he told me that instead of hating it, I should strive to be the best- even if its being the best bus boy. Just take pride in it, he would tell me. I took his advice and soon got promoted to a waiter where I walked away every night with a large wad of cash. You could say that I was enjoying work a bit more.

Getting older, I learned that life is not always going to turn out your way and especially being a college student trying to get a job, it is going to be hard to do exactly what you want. You will most likely be turned down for jobs or currently be in a job that your not ecstatic about. Since none of you know my brother, I am going to fill his annoyingly optimistic voice and tell you just be the best at whatever your doing right now and soon great things will come your way. You may not know what your doing even when you wake up in the morning, but putting your best food forward is the right step to the successful future you dream about.
