Working For Yourself

Our last couple of speakers have been very engaging and interesting, but they also have one thing in common. The Bourbon Review and Bullhorn Creative are two companies founded and created within in the last ten years.

The Bourbon Review was created by two friends with good ideas. Bullhorn Creative was founded by a few people who were willing to do anything to be successful. Both of these companies started small and fought hard to become successful running business’. Present day, The Bourbon Review publishes four magazines a year, produces content on their website, and is involved with many events that have to do with bourbon. Bullhorn Creative is now being run out of two offices and is working with many nationally known companies. All in all, the founders of these two business’ had an idea and ran with it.

My question is, is it so hard to find a job that it’s just easier to work for yourself? Recently, I have been on the job hunt for a summer job that pays but will also be worth my time. Impossible, I know. Looking for a job is hard, there are so many requirements and qualifications. This makes me think maybe its just easier to work for yourself. There are pro’s and con’s on both sides of the spectrum.

Pro’s to creating a business is simple, you work for yourself. You are the boss and you make the decisions. However, these pros’ can overlap with the con’s. Being your own boss and making all the decision is a lot of pressure. You also have to have commitment, and prepare for the first year to either be the start of something new or a complete fail.

These pro’s and con’s makes me think, what would be more beneficial? Trying to find a job or work for myself? Basing my answer on these two speakers, it looks pretty easy to start a business. I know not every business is going to be a success, but these two speakers are great examples of the options everyone has to become as successful as they are.
