UK-Based Artist Residencies for Summer 2017

As they often say, there’s no time like the present. Below is a comprehensive list of UK-based artist-in-residence opportunities with deadlines ending this month. Whether you crave the solitude of a rural idyll in which to hone your practice or garner your inspiration from the hectic rush of the city, this little island has it all. From the eclectic, vibrant bustle of the Gasworks space in South London to an unmissable chance for a female artist upon the idle women boat, the following line-up is most definitely not to be missed.

Gasworks

Gasworks is a non-profit, contemporary visual art organisation based in South London. Open to this practitioners in all disciplines, this fully-funded residency is a fantastic and rare opportunity for an early/mid-career artist from New Zealand to create and produce new work in the bustling, vibrant environment of arguably the best city in the world.

idle women — On The Water

A unique opportunity female artists who fit the iIdle women criteria to travel upon the Selina Cooper boat for a period of between two days and two weeks. This residency is not funded, but residing on the boat is free in exchange for ‘making an offer’ to other women, for example, teaching a skill, facilitating a workshop or sharing home-made food. This is an incredible opportunity to collaborate with others and exchange skills in a peaceful, serene and creative environment.

Deadline: Friday 21 April 2017

Location: A stay on the Sienna Cooper boat, Northern England

Length:
​Women can apply to stay for as little as two nights or up to two weeks between 12 June — 20 August 2017

Funded:
· Artists will be expected to cover and arrange your own transport and living
expenses for their time aboard but there will be no financial costs payable
to or from idle women.

· The invitation is based on an exchange for your skills and time only.

What’s Included:
Materials for your workshops, to be negotiated with idle women

Open To:
All women from the UK and Ireland, aged 21 and over.

Priority goes to:
· Women who have already had some invested involvement with idle women

· Women working in the women’s sector

Shona Projects Residency

An opportunity for no less than twelve artists, this one week residency takes place on the remote island of Eilean Shona, located off the West Coast of Scotland. Participants will be collected from the nearest main land point and taken by a small boat to the location. The residency has been created in response to recent socio-political unrest, and provides an incredible opportunity to explore the concept of a ‘safe-space’ in a collaborative setting based in a truly isolated environment.

Rough Mix

Based in Peebles, Scotland (just south of the city of Edinburgh), this residency aims to encourage artists to try out new ideas and ways of working in a supportive, experimental environment. An endeavor in collaboration between the selected multi-disciplinary artists and a group of performers, places are prioritised for an applicant who identifies themselves as deaf or disabled, and for another artist from a Black, Asian or Minority Ethnic (BAME) background. The residency culminates in a work-in-progress showing. An excellent opportunity for early-career artists.

Wasps Studio

The Admiral’s House is a stunning studio-inclusive set up-nestled on the Isle of Skye, just off the West Coast of Scotland. Even though this is a non-funded opportunity, there are a myriad of benefits; the most pertinent of these being the breathtaking landscape and the peaceful solitude of the surroundings. Excellent value when you consider all that’s included, this residency is most definitely worth further exploration if your means allow.

Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop

Set in the stunning Scottish city of Edinburgh, this specialist contemporary sculpture workshop provides courses to the public alongside support, funding and space that enables artists to explore new ideas outside of their normal practice. This particular (micro) residency looks fantastically supportive, bolstered by access to top-notch, state-of-the-art facilities. With the emphasis on exploration, there is no expected outcome from the practitioner, or the pressure to produce for a public exhibition at the end of the allocated timeframe.
