Why do solar panels demonstrate your commitment to sustainability?

As the co-owner of a solar energy company I have gained different perspectives as to why people are actually investing in solar.

It’s interesting, when ever I would ask a client or a friend “why they thought solar panels helped the environment?”, majority of them weren’t exactly sure.

Now of course I would never blame them for not knowing as my job is to help educate them on the environmental benefits, and show them how it could help with their energy needs. But it was to my surprise how solar panels was so heavily promoted as a solution to help save our planet yet it wasn’t actually promoted on ‘how’ it would help save our planet.

A lot of people are investing in solar because of its ‘perceptual meaning’. It speaks “eco-friendly”, and says a lot about you as a person when you decide to go solar.

Now because of mainstream media’s perception of solar panels, a lot of businesses and homes are investing into it because it demonstrates your “care for the environment” which is true but it is also important to also understand why.

Statistically speaking, newer generations are more attracted to people and companies who give back to the world compared to older generations, which is why solar can play such a big role especially in the new economy.

The reason solar panels create this ‘commitment-effect’ is because of what we’ve been taught all our lives.

For many years environmentalists, celebrities, teachers have always talked about this concept of ‘global-warming’, and how it affects our planet. And they’ve always downplayed our current methods of energy production through fossil fuels, coal, and oil as destroying this planet.

Because the two largely promoted renewable alternatives are solar and wind, we grew up believing that these were the new methods to help our environment. You can probably remember your teacher talking about global warming and solar panels in school.

So to answer the question; “Why do solar panels demonstrate your commitment towards sustainability?” is purely based on what we’ve been told growing up. It’s as if we grew up with the idea of solar panels as the best way to help save our planet.

Now of course solar panels are providing huge benefits by reducing our carbon footprint, and providing a more clean source of energy. However, it will take a number of years before solar becomes more widely accepted and properly promoted on how it can be used to change our world.
