Hack The Ban announces an immigrations hackathon in NYC
An event for the benefit of vulnerable communities
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
BROOKLYN, New York — Hack the Ban, a hackathon aimed at bringing together multidisciplinary creatives and organizations at the forefront of immigration issues with vulnerable communities, will be taking place on Saturday, February 25th. It will take place at NYU’s MAGNET (Media and Games Network) in Brooklyn.
The event’s purpose is to help participating organizations serve their communities effectively by providing digital media tools and solutions. Hack the Ban’s three primary goals are: design with purpose, create concrete solutions that are immediately usable, and foster a technical support community for the resistance.
The hackathon is organized by three NYU alumni — Leslie Martinez, Sriya Sarkar, and Helen Carey — in conjunction with CUNY CLEAR (Creating Law Enforcement Accountability & Responsibility), a project based out of the City University of New York (CUNY) School of Law. CLEAR, which is also a participating organization at Hack the Ban, addresses the unmet legal needs of Muslim, Arab, South Asian, and other communities in the New York City area that are particularly affected by national security and counter terrorism policies and practices.
Other participating organizations at the hackathon include the International Refugee Assistance Program (IRAP), MPower Change, and DRUM — South Asian Organizing Center (formerly Desis Rising Up and Moving).
