So You Want to Publish in Progressively Speaking…
A few things you should know before hitting the submit button.
Progressively Speaking is a new publication specializing in information, analysis, and practical advice for the progressive movement broadly defined — including Democrats, Democratic Socialists, Greens, moderates, and left-leaning independents. We are open to submissions from anyone interested in building up — as opposed to tearing down — people and causes looking to make the U.S. and the world a more just, equitable, and humane place for all.
PS is different from other progressive publications on Medium. Most important, we aren’t interested in publishing articles about what is wrong with Trump, Republicans, the Right, or right-wing media. Those pieces are incredibly important, but there are already plenty of places to publish them.
What we are looking for are articles about how to make the progressive movement more powerful. We like to publish pieces about what the progressive movement is currently doing wrong (so we can do better). And pieces that help us understand people outside the movement (so we can communicate with them more persuasively). And articles about what’s wrong with our electoral strategy (so we can fix it).
What PS is looking for:
- The basics: good writing, good editing, and good formatting.
- A unique perspective and voice.
- A clear thesis, strong arguments, and compelling evidence.
- Personal stories about yourself or people you know.
- Expertise. You don’t have to have a degree, but you should know more about what you’re writing about than the average reader.
- Respect and tolerance for all people (not just those who think like you).
- Articles that are, ideally, five to seven minutes in length.
- Articles that meet Medium’s content guidelines, are likely to be curated, and are behind the paywall.
- Writers who are open to constructive criticism and willing to rewrite articles with editorial guidance.
